Equinox Film Festival
A student-run film festival for Nashville high school students
What is the Equinox Film Festival?
The Equinox Film Festival is an annual film contest hosted by the Digital Media Club at Montgomery Bell Academy and is open to any middle or high school student in Nashville. The festival was first created in 2023 by Eric Zhong (MBA '24) and Hunter Sava ('27) to encourage students to learn about and explore filmmaking. Both wanted to give students the opportunity to try something new and find a passion in the work that goes into creating a film. After films are submitted, three MBA faculty and staff will judge the submissions anonymously and award prize money to the top three films. In the spring, all films are shown at the MBA ENDADA Music & Arts Festival.
2025 Festival
The Digital Media Club is excited to announce that the Equinox Film Festival will be taking place again in 2025!
This is the second year for the film festival. The club is looking forward to improving and expanding the festival. Interested students have a few months to put together an idea, shoot it, and edit the film before April 7, when all films are due. Collaboration is encouraged, but solo projects are also welcome. Our prizes for this year are $300, $200, and $100 for the top three films.
Dates for 2025
April 7 - Deadline for submitting films
April 21 - Winning films are announced (winners will be emailed)
April 26 - Films are shown at the ENDADA Music & Arts Festival
Guidelines
- Any film medium or genre is accepted. Be creative! You can create anything from an animation to a documentary. Find something you would enjoy creating a film about and run with it!
- Content Restrictions: Do not promote discrimination, harm, or violence towards any individual or group. Be all-age appropriate (G-PG). For more information on things to avoid, see here.
- Time Requirement: The film should be 5 minutes or less.
- Originality: All work must be your own or your group’s. You may use others’ music or songs, but they must be credited. AI is only permitted to help with ideas or to generate your music (but must be credited if used). The script must be entirely written by you or your group. You may adapt the script from a book, movie, series, short story, poem, myth/legend, etc., but it must be in your own words.
- Credits: Include credits in your final film submission. Name all participants and their role in the creation of the film. If unoriginal content (such as music) was used, it must be included in the credits.
The Digital Media Club has the right to exclude films from judging if they violate the above guidelines.
Film submissions will open March 1, 2025. Information on how to submit your film will be posted on this page then.
All films must be submitted no later than April 7, 2025 to be considered for prize money.
Judging and Prizes
A version of each film without credits will be submitted to the judge to restrict biases.
Once all films are submitted, the judges will assign each film a score out of 20 points based on the topics below. The film’s final score will be the total of each judge’s score (out of 60). Ties are broken by the judges’ vote. The judges are three MBA faculty and staff: Dr. Farhoumand, Mr. McAlister, and Mr. Markham.
Originality/Creativity: 0-8 points
Storytelling/Plot: 0-8 points
Technical (Editing, Audio): 0-4 points
We are looking for thoughtful films with a unique and interesting plot. The guidelines are intentionally left open-ended: we want to see what you come up with!
Prize money will be given to the top three highest scoring films.
First Place - $300
Second Place - $200
Third Place - $100
Students will be contacted about their film’s standing on April 21, 2025 and how to pick up prize money if their film ranked in the top three.
Filmmaking Sessions
Due to recent changes, we will not be able to host filmmaking workshops over the weekend. MBA students should check the daily announcements for workshops during breaks.
2024 Festival
Last year was our first year of the Equinox Film Festival. We received many great films from MBA students and awarded prizes to the following films:
The Martian by Brandt and Dax Chretian (1st place)
Sonnet 87: An Adaption by Aziz Sahibnazarova, Jack Hawkins, and Robiya Sahibnazarova (2nd place)
The Procrastinator by Eric Zhong (3rd place)
At the ENDADA Festival, we set up a viewing room and screened all the submitted films. It was considered a success by many, encouraging us to rerun the film festival the next year.
